Determination of sustainability KPIs in the context of ESG reporting with Intelligent Document Processing as a practice case

The systematic recording of sustainability KPIs in the course of the adopted legal requirements for sustainability reporting is becoming increasingly relevant for many companies. According to CSRD, from 2025 onwards, many medium-sized companies will also have to report their business model, strategy and implementation in connection with sustainability topics in the annual management report. The area-wide relevance for solutions for analysis, reporting and, above all, procurement and consolidation of the necessary data is increasing enormously. The origin of the data is the digital document. However, companies often encounter paper-based processes and documents without the ability to efficiently digitize and process them. Intelligent Document Processing is about using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Machine Learning to extract texts from various documents, for example from invoices, old books or contracts, and convert them into structured information in order to make them available in tables or databases and then analyze them in terms of sustainability reporting. Digitally provided and combined with further sustainability KPIs, the necessary data basis for ESG reporting is created. The subsequent reporting and analysis of the data should be strongly characterized by the idea of self-service, in order to be able to monitor and report industry- and division-specific key figures in line with current and future requirements. The goal must be to enable companies to independently include new data in their ESG reporting in order to make savings potential visible in a targeted manner and to comply with legal requirements.
