Quantum chips for quantum computers with ion traps – What is the state of the art, where is the journey going?

From the current perspective, it is difficult to assess which of the known quantum physical approaches for quantum computers will lead to commercial solutions in the future. One of the approaches is based on the interaction of ions in an ion trap. In this article, the first short part outlines the state of the art and the current challenges in the development of ion traps for quantum computers. A second part shows the currently available wafer technologies and ways to qualify and further develop.
